Where a boy learns to become his best self

Agawam’s emphasis on personal and interpersonal growth comes alive through the Katiaki program. Every camper is assigned a Katiaki goal, or personal growth goal to work toward each week  related to his character, personality, or relationships. At the end of the week, if staff agrees that a camper has made a conscientious effort to attain his Katiaki, he is honored publicly in a special candle lighting ceremony at our Council Fire.

Agawam’s seven-week program is rare in this era of competing priorities and elaborate scheduling. Because our program is driven by character development and interpersonal growth, the length of time spent at camp becomes especially important. At the core of each camper’s finding his best self are the sustained relationships made possible by the full-season experience — community living, confidence building, leadership development, personal growth, and the development of friendships that will last a lifetime.

Each summer, we welcome over 100 local Maine boys for a full week of the Agawam experience at no cost to them. Established in 1971, the Main Idea embodies our commitment to lead by example in giving back to the larger community and embracing diversity in all its forms.

Camp Agawam’s alumni feel so deeply connected to camp that when Agawam’s founding family retired in 1985, a group of former campers and counselors came together to purchase Agawam and form the nonprofit Agawam Council. The Agawam Council Board of Directors comprises alumni and parents who work closely with camp leadership to ensure Agawam’s strength and continuity.
